View Full Version : R1 sparkplugs suck.
Yup yup.
Remind me not to change those again for awhile :lol
Have fun doing yours Ross. It's not hard just a pain in the balls. I have 13k on mine and they still looked really good. Guess the bike is running right.
Time for a 04.

I was actually talking to Frank when I was doing it... and said to myself..and him how much of an ass I am for not getting them BEFORE I did all this...LOL thats ok though...after installing the PC3 the bike is running like a champ...went down and ran it on Riverviews marked off 1/4 mile...lets leave it as...it was fast... and much smoother response then before without it....

mine were very easy to take out.
You guys just need to get the skill.
Thats what college for cars learns yah.
It's just a pain - not hard.
I wouldn't want to do it on the side of the road :)
Not to mention the amount of electrical connections I had to move out of the way. Damn connectors tore up my finger :lol
There is more wires on these bikes then anything else.

I forgot you have an 02.
So you have alot more electrical due to the fuel infection.

ANy special trick you guys learned when changing the plug? Or is it just take it slow.
I'll be doing mine during the off season.
Take off your side fairings. It'll help with pulling some wires away from spark plug #4.
Use the tool that comes with the tool kit to remove #4 plug - it'll make it easier.
I just used a ratchet with a long extension on the other 3.

I forgot to ask but what spark plug is the correct one to use. I know i saw a bunch of threads on the r1-forum about it, but I wanted to check with you guys and see what ones you used?
I see that on yamaha's website parts list call out the NGK IR CR9EIA 9
:)
Yes that is the plug I used.
You can also use the CR9EIX

hey Roc... yeah I took all the fairings off also... I ended up using the same ratchet but used a knuckle on #4...I made by with that... didnt even think to use the tool... <slap myself> the plug Zac listed will be the one to use... they are usually good for 10000 miles...or so...

Bought some new plugs for the bike last week and they cost $9.58 each. I was alittle shocked at the price but I guess thats the price for high performance :lol
